DHAKA, Sept 2, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 209 people in separate anti-crime drives across the capital over the past 24 hours, while police recovered two pistols, a shotgun, two magazines and 13 rounds of ammunition in connection with a shooting at a businessman's residence in Demra.

The arrests were made in crime-prone areas under the DMP's Mirpur and Tejgaon divisions during regular operations conducted on Tuesday, said a DMP press release.

In the Mirpur Division, police arrested 130 people. Of them, 36 were arrested by Mirpur Model Police Station, 21 by Shah Ali, 33 by Pallabi, four by Kafrul, 18 by Darus Salam, 11 by Rupnagar and seven by Bhashantek police stations.

Another 77 people were arrested in the Tejgaon Division. 

Mohammadpur Police Station accounted for the highest number, arresting 40 people, followed by Adabor with 11, Hatirjheel with eight, Tejgaon and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with seven each, and Tejgaon Industrial Area with four.

Meanwhile, Demra Police arrested Tarikul Islam Tapas, 38, and Md Masud Rana, 35, in a case filed over gunfire at a businessman's house in Sarulia.

Acting on information from the suspects, police recovered two pistols, two magazines and five rounds of bullets, as well as an old single-barrel shotgun and eight rounds of cartridges.

Police said several masked and helmeted men riding motorcycles attacked the residence on Ranimahal Road at around 4:10am on August 28 and fired multiple shots at a second-floor window. 

The gunfire shattered the window glass and caused property damage estimated at Tk 30,000. Four spent bullet casings were recovered from the scene.

During the investigation, police used technology to identify those allegedly involved. Tapas was arrested in Demra at around 2:10am on Tuesday. 

Based on information provided by him, police later raided a house in Barabo area of Rupganj, Narayanganj, and arrested Rana.

Police subsequently recovered the firearms and ammunition based on information provided by the two suspects.

A separate case under the Arms Act was filed at Rupganj Police Station in connection with the weapons. 

The two suspects were handed over to Rupganj Police for further legal action.

Police said efforts are continuing to arrest the other suspects involved in the shooting.

Those arrested in the separate DMP anti-crime drives were also sent to the courts.
