DHAKA, Sept 2, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) has ruled out any current or future shortage of international bandwidth, saying it is fully prepared to meet the country's present and future demand.

BSCPLC made the statement in response to misleading reports recently published by some news media and online portals under headlines such as "Bangladesh on the brink of bandwidth crisis, major disruption feared in internet sector" and "Internet prices may rise, speed may fall amid bandwidth crisis".

The company in a media release today said such reports on bandwidth shortage and price hikes were divorced from reality. Considering the country's future demand, BSCPLC is implementing another Trusted Submarine Cable System, SEA-ME-WE-6, alongside its existing two Trusted Submarine Cable Systems, SEA-ME-WE-4 and SEA-ME-WE-5.

The combined capacity of the two existing submarine cables is around 7,200 Gbps, of which around 4,000 Gbps bandwidth is already being supplied in the country, while BSCPLC has the capacity to supply another around 3,200 Gbps.

Once the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable comes into operation in 2027, the country will have a total bandwidth supply capacity of 34,000 Gbps through the system. According to projections by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the country's total bandwidth demand will reach 30,000 Gbps in 2030.

By 2027, the total bandwidth capacity of the state-owned submarine cables will stand at 41,000 Gbps, which will be sufficient to meet the country's growing bandwidth demand, it said. Besides, bandwidth is being imported according to demand through the country's six International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) operators.

Moreover, BSCPLC has already started the process of joining a fourth submarine cable. In view of the situation, BSCPLC said it was fully prepared to meet the country's current and future bandwidth demand, adding "there is currently no shortage of international bandwidth supply and no possibility of any shortage in the future".

BSCPLC also said it has already been providing bandwidth to customers at attractive packages along with continuous price reductions, making international bandwidth more affordable. As bandwidth usage increases in the future, BSCPLC will provide bandwidth at more affordable prices, it said.

Considering the overall situation, BSCPLC said "the reports concerning a bandwidth shortage or an increase in bandwidth prices were not correct and had been disseminated deliberately". It urged all concerned not to be alarmed by such misleading reports.

BSCPLC said it remained committed to protecting the country's digital sovereignty and ensuring the security of national strategic information infrastructure.
