23 jailed, Tk 192,000 fined in DMP eviction drive

DHAKA, April 1, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) traffic 
division carried out a coordinated eviction drive across different parts of 
the capital, imposing fines totaling Taka 192,000 and sentencing 23 
individuals to various terms of imprisonment.

The day-long drive was conducted today, focused on clearing illegal 
encroachment from footpaths and roads, collecting fines, seizing goods, and 
taking legal action against violators, according to a DMP press release.

According to sources from the Traffic Lalbagh Division, 13 individuals were 
arrested during an operation in the Goyalghat-Narinda area under Kotwali 
Traffic Zone for violating the law. 

Cases were filed under the Road Transport Act-2018, and seized goods were 
confiscated. 

The process of sending the arrested individuals to court is ongoing.

In the Traffic Wari Division, a special drive was conducted from Dholai Khal 
to Jatrabari intersection and along Shaheed Faruk Sarani. Illegal roadside 
shops and businesses were removed, and seven businessmen were fined a total 
of Taka 15,000, while others were warned.

Meanwhile, in the Traffic Ramna Division, an operation was carried out from 
Moghbazar intersection to Banglamotor signal to free occupied sidewalks. A 
total of 49 video cases and 10 instant cases were filed against illegally 
parked motorcycles. 

Additionally, Taka 15,000 in fines was imposed through a mobile court, and 
goods equivalent were seized.

In the Traffic Mirpur Division, six traders were fined Taka 65,000 in Pallabi 
Zone's Kazipara, Shewrapara, and Bhashantek areas, and illegal occupation was 
removed.

The Traffic Motijheel Division conducted operations from Nightingale 
intersection to Fakirapool Kacha Bazar, collecting around Taka 70,000 in 
fines and arresting 10 individuals.

In the Traffic Tejgaon Division, eviction efforts were carried out in the 
Indira Road area, removing illegally placed goods and instructing traders 
accordingly.

The Traffic Gulshan Division warned around 50 shops for illegal sidewalk 
occupation and imposed fines totaling aka 27,000 for violations. 

In the Traffic Uttara Division, shopkeepers were verbally warned against 
illegal occupation of footpaths.

The DMP officials said such coordinated eviction drives will continue to 
ensure smooth movement for the public and maintain discipline on city roads.
