JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Dec 12, 2025 (BSS) - Hundreds of students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) staged a rally on campus today, protesting the broad-daylight assassination attempt on Inqilab Moncho spokesperson and aspiring candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency Sharif Osman Hadi.
The demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack.
After the rally, students along with leaders of the JU Central Students' Union (JUCSU) locked the main entrance of the university's administrative building around 6:30 pm, pressing for the swift trial of teachers accused of supporting the attacks on protesting students and faculty members during the 2024 July Uprising.
Students alleged that although the university administration repeatedly set deadlines to complete investigations, it failed to follow through. While students involved in the 2024 incident were punished earlier, the trial process for the accused teachers has reportedly remained stalled.
A memorandum was submitted to Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, urging immediate completion of the pending trials. As the Vice-Chancellor did not provide a specific deadline, students proceeded to lock the administrative building.
JUCSU General Secretary Mazharul Islam said, "Sharif Osman Hadi was shot today with the intent to kill. This reflects a culture of impunity."
Commenting on the unaddressed allegations against teachers, he added, "Certain quarters within the administration are delaying justice. The registrar building will remain locked until the accused teachers are tried."
Vice-Chancellor Ahsan responded that disciplinary actions against students involved in the 2024 July Uprising had already been completed.
"We have been working to resolve these long-standing issues. Nineteen teachers are currently under trial and nine have been temporarily suspended. We were working on this matter yesterday as well. The teachers' trial will definitely be completed," he said.
Earlier at around 4:00 pm, about 50 leaders and activists of the JU unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) also marched on campus, protesting the attack on Hadi.
Addressing a rally following the procession, JU JCD convener Jahir Uddin Babor said, "You have seen today that Hadi, a frontline fighter of the 2024 July Mass Uprising and the Dhaka-8 candidate in the upcoming national election, was shot by miscreants after Juma prayers in an attempt to kill him. This attack is not only on Hadi but on everyone who participated in the July-August mass movement."
He called on the interim government to immediately arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
