JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration today opened a condolence book following the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan inaugurated the condolence book at around 1:15 pm by signing a condolence message, making it open for all to pay their respects.
In his message, the vice-chancellor said the nation has lost a guardian and a statesman with the demise of Begum Khaleda Zia, who was elected prime minister three times. He described her as a symbol of national unity, noting that she earned the title of “Aposhohin Deshnetri” (the uncompromising leader) during the anti-autocracy movement. Her death marks the departure of a legendary figure in the country’s political history, he added.
Dr Ahsan said, “Khaleda Zia rose from a homemaker to a leader of millions in response to the needs of time, nurturing democratic values and remaining steadfast in her struggle to uphold the rights of the country, its soil and its people.”
After the vice-chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Sohel Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr M AbdurRab, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr Md ShamsulAlam, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Professor Mohammad MafruhiSattar, Proctor Professor Dr A K M RashidulAlam, President of the Women’s Club and Associate Professor of the Department of Archaeology Kamrun Nessa Khandaker, along with teachers from various departments, signed the condolence book.
