JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Jan 12, 2026 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) today observed its founding anniversary with a series of programmes, stepping into its 56th year of establishment.
JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan inaugurated the day’s programmes by hoisting the national flag and delivering a speech at the Mritmancha in front of the Old Arts Building.
Pro-VC (Academic) Professor Dr M Mahfuzur Rahman hoisted the university flag on the occasion.
Addressing the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor greeted former and current teachers, students, officers, staff, and well-wishers. He said, “The university has reached its present position through a long journey and now consists of nearly 30,000 members.”
Referring to the Mass Uprising 2024, JU VC stressed that along with acquiring knowledge, the practice of morality must also be maintained.
Following the inauguration, a colourful rally led by the Vice-Chancellor moved through the campus with the participation of deans, institute directors, hall provosts, proctorial members, teachers, students, officers, staff, and guests.
The rally concluded at Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha, where participants observed a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs of the Language Movement, Liberation War, various movements, and the recently deceased Begum Khaleda Zia.
Pro VC (Administration) Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Dr M Abdur Rab, leaders of Teachers’ Association, Proctor, directors of Students-Teachers Centre and Students Counselling and Guidance Centre, presidents of Officers’ and Employees’ Associations, JUCSU Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu and General Secretary Md Mazharul Islam delivered speeches, among others.
The day-long programmes included cultural performances by Ragini Sangeet Vidyalaya, blood group testing by the university unit of Badhan, reminiscence sessions, puppet shows, friendly football and handball matches, cultural evening at Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha, alumni honouring by JUCSU, ramp show, and music performances by instrumental and band groups.
Pitha fair, alpana, and graffiti exhibitions were also organised across the campus.
Jahangirnagar University was formally inaugurated on January 12, 1971.
