Govt adjusts price of urea

DHAKA, Aug 1, 2022 (BSS) - With a view to adjusting to the international
market, the government has increased the price of urea fertiliser by Tk 6 per
kilogram, but the government still would have to provide Tk 59 as subsidy for
per kg urea fertilizer.

The price of urea fertiliser at the farmer level has been fixed at Tk 22 from
Tk 16 while Tk 20 from Tk 14 at the dealer level, which was come into effect
today, said a press release.

At the international market, per kg urea now is being sold at Taka 81, so the
government would have to provide a subsidy of Taka 59 per kg fertilizer even
after increasing Taka 6.

In 2005-06, the subsidy for per kg urea fertilizer was only Taka 15.

"The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is now reaching adequate
fertilizer to the doorsteps of the farmers with minimum price by declining
its price four times since 2009," said the release.

As the price of fertilizer has increased by 3-4 times in the international
market in the last year, the subsidy provided by the government has also
increased by 3-4 times during the period.

In 2020-21, Taka 7,717 crore as the subsidy was provided by the government
while it was Taka 28,000 crore during 2021-22 fiscals, the release added.

The country has sufficient stock of fertilizer as the overall stock of urea
stands at 7.27 lakh tonnes against the demand of 6.19 lakh tonnes while TSP's
stock at 3.09 lakh tonnes, DAP at 6.34 lakh tonnes and MOP at 2.10 lakh
tonnes.
