HC upholds death of one in Sohel murder case

DHAKA, Oct 10, 2022 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today upheld death sentence of one and commuted another's maximum punishment to life imprisonment in a case lodged over the Sylhet laundry shop owner Sohel Ahmed.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Kazi Ebadoth Hossain pronounced the judgment after holding hearing on death reference and jail appeals of the convicts.

The court upheld death of convict Kajol Miah and commuted death sentence of Islam alias Islam Uddin to life imprisonment.

Deputy Attorney General Nawroz Md Rasel Chowdhury took part in the hearing for the state, while Advocate Suza Al Faruque stood for Kajol. Advocate SM Shafiqul Islam moved the case as state appointed counsel for Islam Uddin.

According to the case documents, Islam Uddin and Kajol strangled Sohel Ahmed to death on April 17, 2011, and beheaded his body. They threw his severed head in a water body and torched the body to hide the evidences. The severed head however, recovered by the locals and Sohel's father filed the case against Islam Uddin and Kajol.

Sylhet Special Sessions Judge Court on April 5, 2017, sentenced Islam Uddin and Kajol to death in the case. Later the death reference and jail appeals of the two convicts reached the High Court for hearing.
