DHAKA, Sept 2, 2022 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed was given a warm reception by a citizens committee in New York, USA.

Leaders, workers of the citizen committee as well as common people of the US gathered at Gulshan Terrace Auditorium near Jackson Heights and gave the reception yesterday, according to a message received here today.

US Awami League leader Hindal Qadir Bappa presided over the event, while Bangladesh Consul General to New York Dr Mohammad Monirul Islam was present.

Speaking on the occasion, IGP Dr Benazir Ahmed said, "We won independence by fighting for freedom. But, still our liberation struggle continues. We have to win this fight."

He said that conspiracy against the country, development and progress should be stopped.

Highlighting the role of social media in the dissemination of disinformation, Benazir added, "There was once a time when it was thought that social media would revolutionise journalism. But what do we actually see now?

"It was hoped that the state of society would be clearly documented. But now, we are seeing the circulation of all kinds of fake and absurd information. Information terrorists are running all kinds of propaganda against the country."

The police chief reiterated that concerted effort of all is needed to maintain law and order in the country.

There are 22 information terrorists, he said, adding, Information terrorists' are against the country and spreading propaganda against humanity. 

According to him, "Spurious materials need to be flushed out as soon as they are seen on Facebook". "We must present the real truth and only then will falsehoods be defeated."

The IGP is currently staying in New York to participate in the United Nations Police Chiefs' Conference as a member of the Bangladesh delegation led by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
