HC summons chief conservator of forests

DHAKA, Aug 25, 2022 (BSS) - The High Court has summoned Chief Conservator of Forests M Amir Hossain Chowdhury to appear in court on August 28 for disobeying the court order.

A High Court Division Bench comprising Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice AKM Rabiul Hasan passed the order today.

Lawyer Dewan Md Abu Obaid Hussain appeared as the petitioner and Deputy Attorney General Wais-al-Haruni stood on behalf of the state.

According to the case, on February 24 in 2019, a wood-laden truck from 'Sohag Timber International Pvt Limited' of Manikganj went to Faridpur and was seized by the police.

The Faridpur Forest Department refused to hand over the truck despite the timber buyers showed valid documents, and asked for the timber to be supplied through auction.

An application was made to the Chief Conservator of Forests on March 2, 2019. As the application was not answered, a writ was filed in the High Court on May 2 the same year.

In the writ, the forest secretary, chief conservator of forests, head of Faridpur's divisional officer of the social forest division and Faridpur deputy commissioner were made respondents.

After hearing the writ, the High Court directed the Chief Conservator of Forests to dispose off their petition within 30 days but even after 30 days passed, the authorities didn't respond.

The court issued a legal notice alleging contempt of the court against the concerned persons including the Chief Conservator of Forests on December 21 last year but they still didn't respond.

In June this year, a contempt of court case was filed in the High Court. The High Court today summoned the Chief Conservator of Forests to hear the application.
