DHAKA, Aug 17, 2022 (BSS) - A court here today placed five people including the alleged rider of the bike used by the killer in sensational murder of Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu and college student Samia Afrin Prity in the capital's Shahjahanpur area, on three-day remand each in an arms case lodged over that incident.
The remanded accused are- biker Shamim Hossain alias Mollah Shamim, 35, Toufik Hasan alias Babu, 34, Sumon Hossain, 35, Ehtesham Uddin Chowdhury Opu, 37, and Shariful Islam Hridoy, 27.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Moinul Islam passed the order as police produced them before the court and investigation officer Detective Branch inspector Mozibur Rahman pleaded to place them on seven-day remand each in the case filed with Khilgaon Police Station.
Police arrested Mollah Shamim on August 15 as he was trying to flee the country for India. Acting on the information gathered from him, police later arrested Shariful Islam Hridoy from South Goran area and recovered two foreign-made pistols, believed to be used in the sensational double murder on March 24, eight bullets and three magazines from his possession.
Police also arrested the other three and seized the motorcycle used in the killing after conducting raid acting on the information taken from Babu.
Tipu, former general secretary of Motijheel Awami League, was on his microbus destined for his Khilgaon home on the night of March 24. He was shot dead by a masked assailant in the capital's Shahjahanpur area as his vehicle got stuck in traffic.
Rickshaw passenger Samia Afran Prity was also got shot by stray bullets and died on the spot. Tipu's driver Munna got shot on his hand in the incident.
Tipu's wife Farhana Islam Dolly filed a murder case with Shahjahanpur Police station.
