West Indies keep Bangladesh at bay

DHAKA, June 25, 2022 (BSS)- West Indies put them ahead of Bangladesh on day one of the second and final Test, thanks to a brilliant performance of their bowlers and openers at Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on Friday.

The hosts ended the day on 67-0 after folding Bangladesh for 234 in the first innings. They are now trailing by 167 runs but well set to take a strong lead.

John Campbell was batting on 32 with Kraigg Brathwaite on 30 at stumps.

Jayden Seals and Alzzari Joseph claimed three wickets apiece to wreck havoc on Bangladesh batting line up and they are well complemented by the two wickets haul of debutant Anderson Phillip and Kyle Mayers.

For Bangladesh, Liton Das was the highest scorer with 53 and opener Tamim Iqbal added 46. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shoriful Islam made identical 26 runs.

After being asked to bat first, the good thing for Bangladesh was to avoid the top order collapse which put them embarrassing position in the last few Tests.

Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan Joy put on 41 runs for the opening stand before Phillip rattled the stump of the latter for 10 for his debut wicket.

Bangladesh then progressed well through Tamim and Shanto but the senior opener played a wretched shot to throw away his wicket for 46 runs.

Anamul Haque Bijoy who returned to the Test team after eight years got a start, but failed to carry on, being out on 23.

And when Shanto was dismissed for 36, Bangladesh were left to 105-4. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan, Nurul Hasan Sohan and Mehidy Hasan, all fell to single digit figure as Bangladesh slumped to 165-7.

Liton Das batted with utmost confidence but he too failed to make his innings bigger after reaching his 14th Test fifty.

A 17-ball 26 cameo from Shoriful then propelled Bangladesh past 200 in a pitch that not looked so tougher for batting.
