Apex court upholds death sentence of RU professor

  DHAKA, April 5, 2022 (BSS) - The Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court today upheld death sentence of Rajshahi University Professor along with another for murdering fellow faculty Dr S Taher Ahmed in 2006. 

  Supreme Court officials and lawyers concerned said the apex court upheld the original verdict handed down by Speedy Trial Tribunal sentencing death penalty to Dr Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin and caretaker of teachers housing area Jahangir Alam. 

  The Appellate Division simultaneously upheld the life term of two others - Alam's brother Nazmul Alam and his brother in law Abdus Salam. 

  Taher was a full professor of Geology and Mining Department while convict Mohiuddin is an associate professor of the same department. 

  Taher went missing from his university quarters on February 1 evening while his body was found next day in the septic tank. 

  The trial court originally handed down death penalty to four people but a High Court division bench later acquitted two, upholding the capital punishment of Mohiuddin and Alam. 

  The apex court headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique today said Mohiuddin and Alam must walk to gallows. 

  According to the investigators and prosecution evidence placed before the court professional jealously visibly led Mohiuddin in killing his senior colleague.

  A full bench of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order today dismissing the appeals against the death sentences.

  Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General Bishwajit Debnath represented the state. Advocates SM Shahjahan and Imran A Siddique represented the defendants. 

  Expressing satisfaction with the verdict Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told BSS, "Justice is served. The verdict will let others know that there is no exemption for such condemnable crime."

  On March 17, 2007, Police filed chargesheet against 6. On May 22, 2008, the Rajshahi Speedy Court sentenced four people to death and acquitted two others. 

  The acquitted were- former RU Chhatrashibir president Mahbubul Alam Salehi and Azimuddin Munshi. 

  On April 21, 2013, the High Court upheld the death sentence of Dr Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin and Md Jahangir Alamin, and commuted the death sentences of Nazmul Alam, brother of Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Abdus Salam to life imprisonments. 

  As the death sentence convicts appealed against the High Court verdict, the appeal hearing began on February 22 this year. 

  Dr Taher's wife Sultana Ahmed, son Sanjid Alvi Ahmed, daughter Supreme Court Advocate Segufta Ahmed, Advocate Nahid Sultana Yuthi, Advocate Shakila Raushan were present at the court during the verdict.
