56,877 poor get legal assistance at govt expense

DHAKA, April 2, 2022 (BSS) - A total number of 56,877 poor, helpless and
financially indigent candidates have been provided with legal assistance at
government expense from July-December in the fiscal year 2021-2022.

This information was revealed in a report published in the website of
National Legal Aid Services Organisation.

The report also said that in the six-month period, a total of 12,797 people
received legal aid for free by calling 16430 number, (toll free) hotline
number of National Legal Aid Agency.

The legal aid activities of the National Legal Aid Services Organisation
continued even amid the ongoing pandemic.

The Awami League-led government enacted the Legal Aid Services Act, 2000 to
provide legal assistance at the government's expense to the financially
indigent, helpless and incapable people seeking justice.

After winning the elections held on December 29, 2008, the Awami League took
various steps to ensure justice for the poor, helpless and indigent people
and it continues to do so.

Formed in 2000, the agency is providing legal aid in Supreme Court, all
districts of the country, lower courts, labour courts, district, upazila and
union level.

There are District Committees and offices of the National Legal Aid Service
in each District Judge's Court.

Through various promotions, campaigns, seminars, workshops and projects, this
service is now available at the people's doorstep.
