DHAKA, Jan 06, 2022 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today acquitted two persons sentenced to death by a lower court in a case lodged over the murder of a homeless child in Gazipur Bhawal Shalbon in 2005.
A High Court division bench of Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice K M Zahid Sarwar passed the order, allowing criminal appeals of the convicts - Md Zakir Hossain and Md Anwar Hossain alias Md Razib.
Advocates Mohammad Shishir Manir, Md Asad Uddin and Mohammad Noab Ali argued for the appellants, while Deputy Attorney General Shahin Ahmed Khan stood for the state.
“The court rejected the death reference in the case and allowed their appeals against the conviction. The court, however, asked the Inspector General of Police to take necessary steps against the concerned police official, as he refrained from appearing before the court for testimony,” Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir told newsmen.
A lower court in 2016 convicted the two and sentenced them to death on the charges of killing the unidentified child in 2005.
Acting on suspicion, locals nabbed Md Zakir Hossain and Md Anwar Hossain from under Shahjahanpur Overbridge in the capital on April 9, 2005. They found the severed head of the child from a bag carried by the two. Later Railway Police probed the case and filed charge-sheet against the two.
