DHAKA, Dec 8, 2025 (BSS) - A two-day international symposium titled "Quality Assurance in Engineering Education through Accreditation" began today at a city hotel, with the aim of advancing and standardizing the quality of engineering education in Bangladesh.
The event, now in its fourth edition, is jointly organized by the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) and the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), according to a press release here.
Industries and Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan attended the inaugural session as the chief guest, while BAETE Vice Chairman Prof. Dr. S. Reza Chowdhury delivered the welcome address.
The symposium brought together several distinguished national and international participants, including Professor Kai Sang Lock, Chair of the Washington Accord, Daniela Iacona, Deputy Chair of the Sydney Accord and Director of International Engagement and Governance at ABET and Engineer Mohammad Reazul Islam, President of IEB.
Speaking at the opening session, Adilur Rahman Khan stressed that ensuring quality in engineering education is essential for sustainable development. "Events like this are crucial for aligning our education system with international standards," he said.
Professor Kai Sang Lock highlighted the importance of accreditation, noting, "Accreditation is an essential process to ensure world-class engineering education. With full recognition under the Washington Accord, Bangladesh's accredited engineering degrees are now globally competitive. To sustain this recognition, it is vital to maintain and continuously enhance quality so Bangladeshi engineers can compete worldwide."
Daniela Iacona emphasized the significance of global acknowledgment in education, saying, "International recognition plays a vital role in ensuring quality education. Bangladesh's initiatives in this area will bring long-term benefits for future generations."
The opening ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. Dr. Tanvir Manzur, Chairman of BAETE.
