DHAKA, Dec 27, 2025 (BSS) – Education Adviser Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar today said Bangladesh Textile University (BUTEX) has, within a short span of time, proven how a specialised institution can emerge as an important driving force of the national economy through quality education, research and innovation.
“BUTEX has now become a reliable centre for producing skilled, honest and leadership-oriented human resources for the textile and apparel sector,” he said while addressing the first convocation of Bangladesh Textile University as the convocation president today.
Highlighting the role of the university, Dr Abrar said BUTEX is contributing significantly to strengthening Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry, which remains the backbone of the country’s economy.
Professor of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Dr Xungai Wang addressed the programme as the convocation speaker while Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Dr SMA Fayez spoke as the special guest.
Recalling the century-long legacy of institutional textile education in Bangladesh, the education adviser said the journey that began with the establishment of the District Weaving School in 1911 has passed through many historic milestones and reached its full form in the establishment of Bangladesh Textile University.
He also paid deep tribute to various student movements that played a crucial role in strengthening the foundation of education and research at the institution.
Addressing the newly graduated students, Dr Abrar said they are not merely recipients of academic degrees -- but carriers of a proud legacy – and they bear the profound responsibility of leading the future of the country’s industry and economy.
“Your primary commitment should be to provide innovative solutions to national needs by working with integrity, professionalism and ethical values,” he said.
The education adviser further said that the leadership capacity to face contemporary challenges such as global competition, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, sustainable development and environmentally friendly production lies within the graduates of this university.
Dr Abrar expressed sincere gratitude to the teachers for their tireless efforts and to the parents for their sacrifices, and wished the graduates a bright, successful and prosperous future.
Members of the university’s Syndicate and Academic Council, senior teachers, distinguished guests, guardians and graduating students were also present at the ceremony.
