Three get life-term jail in housewife murder case in Cumilla

CUMILLA, Aug 23, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced three members of a family to life imprisonment for the murder of a housewife in Nangalkot upazila of the district in 2005.
 
The convicts are victim's father-in-law Abdul Momin, mother-in-law Fatema Begum and brother-in-law Md. Nizam, residents of Chupua village of the upazila.
 
The court also fined each of them Taka 20,000, with an additional six months in prison if they fail to pay the fine.
 
Judge Md. Shamsul Alam of the Additional District and Sessions Judge's Fourth Court pronounced the verdict. All three convicts were present in the courtroom during the delivery of judgment.
 
Mariam's husband Abdul Matin, who was also accused in the case, was acquitted for lack of sufficient evidence.
 
According to the case documents and the prosecution, Mariam Begum was killed on the night of September 24, 2005, following a family dispute at Chupua village in Nangalkot.
 
The following day, her father Soleman filed a murder case with Nangalkot Police Station accusing four people.
 
During the lengthy trial, the prosecution examined 12 witnesses. After reviewing the testimony and other evidence, the court found three of the accused guilty and handed down the verdict.
 
Additional Public Prosecutor Md. Ikram Hossain confirmed the verdict.
