7 to die, 7 get life imprisonment for double murder in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Aug 20, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today convicted 14 persons in a 2016 double murder case, sentencing seven of them to death and seven others to life imprisonment.

Additional Sessions Judge Muhammad Nazam Uddin also fined them Tk 50,000 each.

The convicts sentenced to death are Md Sakhawat, 22, son of late Abdul Majid; Md Sohel, 20, son of Md Taijul; Md Al Amin, 20, son of Achor Shekh; Md Saddam, 20, son of late Bhula Shekh; Md Uzzal, 20, son of Md Kamal; Ontar, 20, son of Shuja; and Fayjur, 22, son of Sahidul, all of Gajaria village in Madarganj upazila of the district.

The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Md Chan Mia, 40, son of late Gias; Md Jiar, 35, son of Md Achor Shekh; Md Shah Alom, 30, son of late Bhula Shekh; Md Kawsar, 21, son of Rafijol; Md Rifat, 21, son of Md Tara Mia; Md Sumon, 21, son of Md Abbas Ali; and Md Mustofa, 40, son of late Natu Shekh, all of the same village in Madarganj upazila.

According to the prosecution, due to previous enmity, the convicts called Swapon Miah, 16, and his uncle Mahar Ali, 19, out of their home to attend a music programme in Gajaria on the night of May 16, 2016.

They went out at around 9pm and remained missing since then. On May 19, their bodies were found in a jute field in Kukurmari village of Madarganj upazila.

Md Jahangir Alam, father of Swapon and elder brother of Mahar Ali, filed a case with Madarganj Police Station.

After examining 18 prosecution witnesses and relevant documents, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced them to the aforesaid punishments.
