MEHERPUR, Feb 9, 2026 (BSS) - Maulana Md. Tajuddin Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the Meherpur-1 constituency in the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, has pledged to build a Meherpur free from drugs and online gambling.

“Many families have been destroyed by the scourge of drugs…Thousands of families lose everything from online gambling. So, we want to build a Meherpur free from drugs and online gambling,” he said.

Maulana Tajuddin unveiled his pledges in an exclusive interview with Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) here recently.

Maulana Md. Tajuddin Khan joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in 1994. He is currently the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami in Meherpur district and works professionally as a teacher. Here are the excerpts of the interview:

BSS: What are your election pledges for the voters of your constituency?

Tajuddin Khan: Meherpur is an agriculture-dependent district. Not a single inch of farmland will remain uncultivated. Farmers will receive fertilizers, seeds and irrigation facilities based on their cultivation, not political affiliation. Additionally, education or learning based industries will be established to provide employment opportunities for students. We will also improve transportation infrastructure and the quality of education to ensure that farmers can easily market their produce.

BSS: What instructions have you given to party leaders and activists regarding compliance with the election code of conduct?

Tajuddin Khan: We are fully complying with the election code of conduct. Our leaders, activists and supporters have been strictly instructed to follow it as well. Our respect to law is not limited to elections; we always abide by the law.

BSS: What is your position on the referendum regarding the July Charter?

Tajuddin Khan: During the July Revolution, around 1,500 people lost their lives and nearly 30,000 were injured. Through the sacrifices of students and the public, we got a new Bangladesh. Change in the country is necessary. The provisions in the July Charter will bring positive changes to the nation. We support a “Yes” vote in the referendum and are campaigning accordingly to build a new Bangladesh.

BSS: What are your expectations regarding the upcoming national parliamentary election?

Tajuddin Khan: We want a level playing field. We will support democratically the candidate elected in a fair and impartial environment. The people of Mujibnagar, the birthplace of Bangladesh’s independence, remind us of the responsibility of history. Those who stood on the soil, where the first government of Bangladesh took oath in 1971, still expect politics based on democracy, justice and dignity. The spirit of independence must not remain limited to monuments; it must be reflected in real development and good governance.

Among the two parliamentary constituencies in the district, four candidates are contesting in the Meherpur-1 (Sadar and Mujibnagar) constituency. They are: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate for Meherpur-1 Masud Arun, Jatiya Party candidate Abdul Hamid and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) nominee Advocate Mizanur Rahman.

The total number of voters in the Meherpur-1 constituency is 3, 16,972 including 1, 57,890 male voters and 1, 59,082 female voters.
