BRAHMANBARIA, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - A fish trader was fined Taka one lakh for 
allegedly tampering with a weighing machine to deceive customers by giving 
them less fish than the stated weight in Brahmanbaria.

The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate conducted the drive at 
wholesale and retail fish shops in Anandabazar area of Sadar upazila around 
12 noon today.

Assistant Director of the Directorate's Brahmanbaria Office Iftekharul Alam 
Rizvi led the operation.

During the drive, tampering was detected at a shop named M/S Siam Mia, where 
fish seller Apel Mahmud had secretly fitted a rubber band and rope inside the 
weighing machine.

The weighing machine, along with the rope and rubber used in the 
manipulation, was seized immediately during the operation.

Apel admitted to the malpractice and pledged not to engage in such activities 
in the future.

Later, he was fined Taka 1 lakh under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 
2009, and the fine was realized immediately. The shop was also warned that 
stricter legal action would be taken if such malpractice recurs.
