DHAKA, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called for building a democratic, justice-based, discrimination-free and humane state system being imbued with the spirit of the July Mass Uprising.

“It is our responsibility to build a democratic, justice-based, discrimination-free and humane state system by upholding the spirit of the July Mass Uprising. The role of such preservation and museums is extremely important in presenting the history of the July Mass Uprising properly to the upcoming generations,” he said.

The President made the remarks while visiting the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum in the capital this morning, President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam told BSS during a briefing.  

Earlier, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Cultural Affairs State Minister Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khayyam, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Policy and Strategy Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Director General of the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum, and senior officials from the President’s Office and the concerned ministry welcomed the President to the July Memorial Museum.

His wife, Rahat Ara Begum, was with the President at the time.

The President entered the July Museum after collecting a visitor ticket and observed historical photographs depicting various stages of the Great Liberation War and Bangladesh’s democratic journey through the ‘Long Walk to Democracy’ walkway.
 
He also visited the memorial built in memory of those who were killed during the 16-year fascist rule and the replica Aynaghar.

The President also watched a short documentary made on the July Mass Uprising there.

At the time, he said, “We have been freed from the fascists and regained democracy, but we have paid a very high price. The state can never repay the debt owed to the martyrs and injured July fighters.”

“May such tragic and brutal massacres never take place in this country again,” he hoped.

The President also visited the sections of the museum on the BDR massacre, Shapla massacre, torture materials and enforced disappearances and became emotional upon seeing letters, memorabilia and mementos of the martyrs.

He also visited various important events of the July Uprising and sections depicting the struggle of students-people during the  July Movement

Paying deep tribute to the martyrs and injured of the July Mass Uprising, the President described their sacrifices as an ‘Important Chapter’ in Bangladesh’s struggle for democracy and justice. 

“Nation will remember with deep respect the sacrifices of the students and people who participated in and laid down their lives during the July Mass Uprising,”  he said.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir wished speedy recovery and wellbeing of all those injured and affected in the July Mass Uprising and planted a tree on the museum premises in tribute to their memory.

During the visit, museum’s research team members Zubayer Ibn Kamal and Farhan Masud briefed the President about various installations and documents of the museum.

At the end of the visit, the President signed the museum’s visitors’ book.

Members of the July Museum Governing Board Sanjida Islam Tuli, Abrar Elias and Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdha were also present during the visit.
