BCC takes initiative to build zoo in Barishal

BARISHAL, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - The Barishal City Corporation (BCC) has taken an initiative to establish a modern and environment-friendly zoo in the city, 33 years after the establishment of Barishal Division.

BCC Administrator Advocate Bilkis Akter Jahan Shireen has submitted a written application to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock seeking necessary measures to establish the zoo in the city.

In a letter sent to the ministry on September 4, she requested the authorities concerned to take the necessary initiative for setting up a modern zoo here.

The letter said around eight lakh people live in the city, which covers nearly 58 square kilometres and comprises 30 wards. Despite its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, the city still has no zoo where children,
teenagers and students can enjoy themselves and gain firsthand knowledge about animals and biodiversity.

School teacher Sharmin Akter, who came to visit Green City Park, said, "A zoo is necessary in Barishal to create opportunities for children to enjoy themselves as well as learn about nature and animals."

Meherab Hossain, a student of BM College who was visiting Bells Park, said, "Although Barishal is a divisional city, it does not have a zoo. Such a facility could play an important role in providing students with both knowledge and entertainment."

BCC Administrator Shireen said a modern zoo could play an important role in creating awareness among children and teenagers about animals and biodiversity alongside providing recreation.

"That's why a letter has been sent to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock," she continued.

She said if the zoo is constructed in a planned and environment-friendly manner, it could become one of the major recreational and educational centres in Barishal.
