RANGPUR, Aug 29, 2026 (BSS) – Rangpur Bar Association (RBA) has decided not to temporarily fight the case on behalf of the arrested accused in the murder case filed for murdering four members of retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel’s family.
 

The decision has been taken in protest of the brutal murders. 
 

RBA General Secretary Advocate Aftab Uddin Ahmed announced the decision on behalf of the association at a press conference held at the RBA auditorium on Saturday afternoon.
 

He said, “We have taken the decision after a thorough discussion. Through this, we want to send a message.”
 
He said, "We can keep this decision for a week or six months. Later, a decision will be taken considering the surrounding situation. We want to send a message that the statement that lawyers support crimes in exchange for money is not correct.” 
 

RBA President Advocate Shahed Kamal Ibne Khatib said that even if a lawyer is not appointed for the accused in a capital punishment case, the state appoints a lawyer during the trial after the charge is framed to establish justice. 
 

He said, “We have temporarily refrained, we will not be on their side. However, considering the subsequent situation, if we feel that the investigation has not been done properly, then we will definitely be on the side of the accused.' 
 

Advocate Aftab Uddin Ahmed said that it is initially evident from the statements given by the arrested accused under Section 164 that the arrested persons are involved in the incident. 
 

“According to the quick action taken by the police administration and the information given by the journalists, the investigation process is progressing smoothly so far. Those who are really guilty should be punished,” he said. 
 
Requesting not to give the incident a political color, Advocate Aftab Uddin Ahmed said that this incident of murders should not be politicized in any way. No one should try to take it into a different political sector. 
 

He said, “Since the case is still under investigation, it would not be right to convict or prosecute anyone until the investigation is complete.” 
 

RBA Member and Administrator of Rangpur City Corporation Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Don, RBA Religion and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary of the RBA Advocate Kawsar Ali and other leaders of the association were present at that time.
 

Earlier, a retired popular teacher of Rangpur Zilla School Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25 and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12, were strangled to death at home few days ago.
 

Police recovered the four decomposed bodies of the popular teacher’s family from their house on Saturday night.
 

Gopinath Chakraborty, elder brother of the deceased Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, filed a murder case against unknown killers with Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali police station on Sunday in connection with the four murders.
 

A  DB Police team of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) arrested the two killers on Sunday.
 

The arrestees are Mugdha Das, 23, son of Kanu Das and Siddhartha Das, 19, son of Binoy Das of the Machhuapara area.
 

They gave confessional statements the same night under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Md Rafiqul Islam over the quadruple murders.  
 

The investigation of the quadruple murder case has been transferred from the Kotwali police station to the Detective Branch (DB) of RpMP. 
 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the RpMP's Detective Branch, Inspector Md Zeenat Ali, is the new investigation officer of the case.
