RAJSHAHI, June 10, 2026 (BSS)- A workshop on the implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2009 was held in Rajshahi with the aim of ensuring citizens’ right to access information, enhancing transparency and accountability in government activities, and promoting good governance.
The workshop was organized by the Cabinet Division today at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The event was chaired by Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam.
The Secretary (Coordination and Reforms) of the Cabinet Division, Farah Shammi, joined the workshop virtually as the chief guest. Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Mohammad Khaled Hasan, also delivered remarks virtually.
Highlighting the background, objectives, and significance of the Right to Information Act, 2009 in establishing citizens’ rights, Joint Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Dr. Mohammad Ashraful Alam, said that the right to information is an essential component of a democratic state system.
He noted that the Act not only ensures accountability in both public and private institutions but also plays a vital role in establishing participatory governance.
Senior Assistant Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Muhammad Sadikur Rahman, gave a detailed presentation on the measures necessary for implementing the RTI Act.
He stated that the law provides citizens with an opportunity to become informed and vocal in cases of irregularities or corruption.
Through a PowerPoint presentation, he explained various sections and subsections of the Act as well as its practical application.
He further emphasized that any citizen can apply for information through the prescribed process, and the concerned authorities are legally obligated to provide the requested information within a specified timeframe.
This, he said, enhances transparency in administrative activities and contributes effectively to preventing corruption.
In his closing remarks, Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam said the RTI Act has created a bridge between citizens and the administration. Its effective implementation is essential to making public services more transparent, accountable, and citizen-friendly.
Greater access to information increases public trust and strengthens the foundation of good governance. Therefore, all concerned officials and employees must work sincerely to ensure the proper application of the law.
Among others present at the workshop were Rajshahi Civil Surgeon Dr. S.I.M. Raziul Karim, Additional Deputy CommissionerBelayet Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Sabina Yasmin and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Ibnul Abedin.
Speakers at the workshop observed that effective implementation of the Right to Information Act would make the activities of government institutions more transparent and citizen-friendly.
They added that ensuring citizens’ right to information would bring positive changes in promoting good governance and preventing corruption.
Officials from various government departments, journalists, and other stakeholders also participated in the workshop.
