Village courts a successful initiative in providing judicial services to rural people at low cost: DC Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, June 9, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah said, "Village courts represent a successful initiative aimed at delivering judicial services to rural population in a manner that is easily accessible, swift, and cost-effective."

To enhance the effectiveness of these legal institutions, it is essential to focus on infrastructural improvements, an increase in personnel, and the genuine involvement of all stakeholders, he said.

Zahidul Islam made the comments as the chief guest at the district-level half-yearly coordination meeting titled 'Progress and To-Dos of Village Court Activities,' which took place at the PTI Conference Room in Chittagong city today.

He emphasized the significance of village courts, noting that approximately 50 lakh cases  are currently pending across the nation, encompassing both high and lower courts.

" If minor disputes can be settled promptly at the local level through village courts, it will alleviate the burden on the judicial system and enable ordinary citizens to receive justice more swiftly. In this context, village courts can serve a highly impactful role," he opined.

The meeting, organized by the Chattogram District Administration as part of the 'Bangladesh Village Court Activation (Third Phase) Project' under the Local Government Department, was chaired by Golam Mohammad Moinuddin, Deputy Director (Deputy Secretary) of the Local Government Department. Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) from 15 upazilas of Chattogram, along with other officials, participated in the event.
