RAJSHAHI, June 5, 2026 (BSS) - A discussion meeting and tree plantation programme were held at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) today marking World Environment Day-2026.
The programme was jointly organised by RUET, the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum, Bangladesh Bird Conservation Forum (BBCF), Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) and Mission Green Bangladesh.
The discussion, held at the university's conference room, was chaired by Assistant Professor Z. M. Manjur Morshed, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Student Welfare.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of RUET Professor Dr. Abdul Kader Jilani addressed the function as the chief guest, while noted zoologist and biodiversity expert Professor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Das presented the keynote speech.
Dr. Molla Rezaul Karim, Chief Adviser of BBCF and Conservator of Forests of the Barishal Coastal Circle, delivered the inaugural speech.
Among others, Professor Dr. B.K. Dam, President of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum; Professor Dr. Md. Jalal Uddin Sarder, founding Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Rajshahi University; Mainul Islam, Deputy Police Commissioner of Motihar Zone; and Tanmoy Sanyal, Divisional Coordinator (Rajshahi and Rangpur) of BELA, spoke as special guests.
The speakers underscored the importance of collective efforts to conserve the environment, protect biodiversity, address the adverse impacts of climate change and ensure sustainable development. They also urged the younger generation to play a more active role in environmental protection.
Teachers and students of the university, environmentalists, nature enthusiasts and members of different environmental organisations attended the programme.
Engineer Junaid Ahmed, founder and General Secretary of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum, moderated the discussion.
Following the discussion, a tree plantation programme was held on the RUET campus, where saplings of various species were planted with a pledge to protect the environment and build a greener Bangladesh.
