KHULNA, June 5, 2026 (BSS) - Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested the prime accused in the sensational triple murder case involving
the killing of a woman and her two grandchildren in Khulna's Sonadanga area.
A joint team of the RAB-6 Headquarters Company and RAB-8 conducted a raid in the Kashipur area under Kotwali Police Station in Barishal on the basis of
confidential information and arrested the fugitive accused, Md. Rafiqul Islam Howlader, 38, on Thursday, a RAB press release said here today.
Rafiqul, son of Almgir Howlader of Daulatpur in Khulna, is the principal accused in the triple murder case filed with Sonadanga Police Station
following the killings that took place on May 29 last.
After the arrest, RAB handed him over to Sonadanga Police Station for further legal proceedings, the release added.
According to the murder case filed by the Masum Bapery, the biological father of the two siblings, truck driver Rafiqul Islam Howlader, the second husband
of the children's mother Mary Begum, allegedly killed Baby Begum, 62, her grandsons Shamim, 13, and Mustakim, 4.
Their bodies were recovered from a rented house in the Darul Aman Mosque Road area under Sonadanga Police Station on Saturday evening.
"Preliminary investigation suggests that Rafiqul might have committed the murders out of resentment stemming from frequent conflicts with his mother-
in-law and stepson," said Sonadanga Police Station Investigation Officer Animesh Mondal.
Investigators said Mary Begum married Rafiqul after separating from her first husband, Masum Bepari. Since the marriage, her mother, Baby Begum, and elder
son, Shamim, reportedly opposed the relationship, leading to recurring family
tensions.
Police said Rafiqul, a truck driver by profession, has a previous theft case against him.
