JESSORE, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained an Indian citizen in Jessore along with diamonds and foreign currencies worth approximately Tk 6.62 crore.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of Jessore Battalion (49 BGB) conducted a drive on the Jessore-Jhikargacha highway near Notunhat, said a press release today signed by Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan.
During the operation, BGB members detained Sujauddin, 52, an Indian national, along with 155.76 grams of diamonds valued at around Tk 6.61 crore.
The detainee, son of Abu Bakkar and a resident of Tamil Nadu, India, reportedly collected the diamonds from smugglers in Dhaka and was transporting them through Benapole to hand them over to an unidentified person in Kolkata, the release said.
The recovered diamonds were examined in the presence of police by a representative of Diamond World in Jessore and were initially confirmed to be genuine.
In addition to the diamonds, BGB seized Tk 5,530 in Bangladeshi currency, INR 5,880, USD 550, THB 200, a mobile phone, and a digital wristwatch from the detainee. The total value of the seized items stands at Tk 66,265,161.
Legal action against the detainee is underway, and steps are being taken to deposit the recovered diamonds and foreign currencies with the Jessore Treasury.
