SUNAMGANJ, March 28, 2026 (BSS) - A two-day folk festival has commenced in the district to celebrate the 110th birth anniversary of Ekushey Padak-winning Baul legend Shah Abdul Karim.
The event is being held at Ujandhol village in Dirai upazila-his birthplace-drawing admirers from across the country and abroad.
Member of Parliament for Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla constituency) Nasir Uddin Chowdhury inaugurated the festival as the chief guest on Friday evening.
Addressing the event, he paid tribute to the Baul icon, describing him as a "proud son of the Haor region" whose music and philosophy have earned global recognition.
"Shah Abdul Karim is not only our pride but a treasure for humanity," he said, emphasizing the importance of preserving his legacy for future generations.
The programme was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia, while teacher Asim Chowdhury conducted the proceedings. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sanjeev Sarkar attended as a special guest.
Organized annually by the Shah Abdul Karim Parishad, the festival takes place on the banks of the Kalni River, adjacent to the Baul maestro's residence. The initiative aims to introduce his philosophical teachings and musical contributions to younger generations.
