JHENAIDAH, Mar 28, 2026 (BSS) - Two farmers were killed and four others injured in a lightning strike in Shailkupa upazila of the district today.
The deceased were identified as Samir Biswas, 40, son of Sushil Biswas and Apu Biswas, 22, son of Prakash Biswas. Both were residents of Kharibaria village in the upazila.
According to local sources, the incident occurred around 12 pm while a group of farmers were harvesting onions in a field of Kharibaria village. A sudden gusty wind and light rain was followed by multiple lightning strikes, hitting the field where they were working. Samir and Apu were struck directly and died on the spot.
Four other farmers sustained injuries. Among them, Ranjit Master, 63, has been admitted to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Shailkupa Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Rashed Al Mamun confirmed that the two victims were brought to the hospital after the incident and were declared dead on arrival.
Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Humayun Kabir Mollah said that the bodies were handed over to the families following necessary legal procedures.
