
SHERPUR, Feb 12, 2026 (BSS) - Voting has begun peacefully in the district with residents of two parliamentary constituencies-Sherpur-1 and Sherpur-2-casting their votes in a calm and festive atmosphere this morning.
While the voting began promptly at 7:30 am, many voters arrived early, collecting their voter numbers before 7:00 am and lining up in anticipation.
Although the initial voter turnout was modest, election officials are optimistic that participation will increase as the day progresses.
In the Sherpur-1 (Sadar) constituency, which covers one municipality and 14 unions, there are a total of 450,488 registered voters. This includes 224,472 male voters, 226,08 female voters, and 8 voters from the third gender category. There are 145 polling centres in this constituency, categorized as follows: 24 as critical, 40 as important, and 81 as general.
Meanwhile, the Sherpur-2 constituency, encompassing Nakla and Nalitabari upazilas with two municipalities and 21 unions, has 440,034 registered voters. Of these, 215,786 are male, and 224,248 are female. There are 154 polling centres, with 55 considered highly significant, 59 as important, and 40 as general.
In total, 30 executive magistrates and four judicial magistrates have been assigned to oversee the voting process in these two constituencies.
The administration has deployed a range of law enforcement agencies, including district-level officers and special striking forces, to ensure the election proceeds smoothly and securely.
Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer, Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman, confirmed that all necessary precautions and arrangements are in place for a free, fair, and peaceful election. "We are committed to providing a festive environment where citizens can exercise their voting rights without disruption," he added.
It is important to note that voting in Sherpur-3 constituency has been postponed following the tragic death of a candidate, affecting one of the three constituencies of Sherpur district.
