RANGPUR, Feb 7, 2026 (BSS) - Former principal of Carmichael College, convener of Rangpur University Implementation Coordination Council, eminent educationist and cultural personality Professor Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq is no more.
He breathed his last at the city's Rangpur Community Medical College Hospital around 9 am on Saturday.
He was 92.
He had been suffering from various old-age diseases including pneumonia and diabetes for a long time.
Professor Haq left behind a wife, a son, two daughters, and numerous students and admirers to mourn his death.
When the news of his death spread, a deep shadow of grief fell on various educational institutions in Rangpur, including the literary and cultural circles.
Professor Dr Rezaul Haq was born on February 18, 1934, in the traditional Mia house in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram.
He matriculated in the first division from Chilmari English High School in 1950 and passed his ISC examinations from Rangpur Carmichael College in 1952.
Later, he secured second place in the second class in the graduation (honors) examination in the Bengali Department from Rajshahi College and third place in the second class in the postgraduate examination from Dhaka University.
In 1977, he was officially nominated for PhD and completed his research work from the University of Calcutta, India.
Professor Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq's colorful career began in 1958 by joining Madanmohan College, Sylhet.
His government service career began by joining Dhaka Science College on August 8, 1961.
From 1966 to 1977, he taught at Carmichael College.
After completing his PhD, he was the head of the Bengali Department of Carmichael College from 1981 to 1984.
After that, he served as the principal of Gaibandha Government College and Dinajpur Government College.
In 1990, he returned to his beloved campus, Carmichael College, as the principal and retired from there in 1991, almost 35 years ago from now.
During his career, he was offered the position of Adviser to the Ministry of Culture and Principal of Jagannath College, but he did not accept it due to his love for the teaching profession.
In addition to teaching, he used to write regularly. His research book was published by Bangla Academy in 1989.
His poetry collection 'Shokatur Sangato' was published in 1991.
In addition, his numerous articles and poems have been published in various newspapers and magazines. He composed his first poem titled 'Hothat' while studying in the eighth grade.
During the rule of the caretaker government in 2007-2008, his role was prominent in the movement to establish a university in Rangpur.
The "Rangpur University Implementation Coordination Council" was formed at his instigation.
As a result of a long movement under his able leadership, 'Rangpur University' was established in 2008.
Later, in 2009, the name of Rangpur University was changed to Begum Rokeya University.
Talking to BSS, former adviser to the caretaker government renowned economist Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman expressed his deep shock at the death of Professor Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq.
He expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased, sought forgiveness for his departed soul and prayed to Almighty Allah to grant him Jannat.
