We welcome decision to ban AL activities: Salahuddin
We welcome decision to ban AL activities: Salahuddin
DHAKA, May 11, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed today said they applauded the government for banning the political activities of Awami League until the trial of the AL and its leaders is completed. "A historic eventful period has taken place in Bangladesh. There are precedents in different countries of the world that fascist parties, which are responsible for genocide are brought into the judicial process as a party and banned. We welcome the government for including the trial of Awami League by amending the International Crimes Tribunal law. BNP respects the nation's desire on the issue of banning Awami League," he said. Salahuddin Ahmed made these remarks  at a discussion at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital. The senior BNP leader said, "Why the BNP has to go to Shahbag to talk? A few months ago, the BNP demanded the trial of the Awami League as a party in writing to the chief advisor. At that time, the demand was made to bring the Awami League under trial for crimes against humanity and genocide. If our advice had been taken into account on time, such an embarrassing situation would not have arisen." "The government has decided to ban the activities of the Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act. We think that the government should bring some amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act for this. Because this law has mentioned the ban on political parties," he said. He also said that there is no mention of banning political activities here. Stating that people across the country are eager to vote in the next parliamentary elections, the BNP leader said, for that, BNP has called on the chief adviser to announce a roadmap for the next elections soon. BNP has been talking about democratic politics for so long, how democratic is it to ban Awami League's political activities? In response to a question from journalists, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "You have to understand that does the world now recognize Awami League as a political party? They had become a fascist force, a mafia force. They practiced fascist and mafia rule on the people of the country for a long time. They are no longer a political party. Therefore, we do not want to give them any label of a political party. We must ensure that no one, local or foreign, can raise questions in the judgment of the party."

DHAKA, May 11, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh and Japan today decided to take all effective steps to implement the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) expeditiously. The discussion was held when Commerce, Textiles and Jute, and Civil Aviation and Tourism adviser SK Bashir Uddin, held a bilateral meeting with Vice Minister of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Ogushi Masaki at the Japan Pavilion of the World Expo 2025 venue in Osaka, Japan, said a press release received here. During the meeting, The Japanese Vice-Minister reiterated his government's commitment to bolstering economic ties with Bangladesh.  He assured that all outstanding issues related to the EPA would be addressed through mutual dialogue, and effective steps would be taken to implement the agreement expeditiously. The Trade Adviser expressed Bangladesh's keen interest in deepening its longstanding friendly relations with Japan, noting that the fifth round of discussions for a proposed Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) had been successfully completed. Both sides discussed in detail the prospects of enhancing bilateral trade, investment opportunities, and strengthening economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan. He called for increased Japanese investment in Bangladesh, highlighting the contribution of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation, which has already invested in fertilizer production in the country.  Bashir Uddin also encouraged both public and private sectors of Japan to explore further investment avenues in Bangladesh. Addressing the potential of Bangladesh's youth population, he stated that a significant portion of the country's population, aged between 16 and 30, is being equipped through training programs to meet the demands of the Japanese labor market.  He informed that Japanese language courses have already been introduced in technical training centres, and sought Japan's cooperation in establishing more such centers with international-standard facilities. Vice Minister Ogushi Masaki noted Japan's growing need for skilled labor and said that the arrival of trained Bangladeshi workers could open a new chapter in bilateral trade relations.  He assured Japan's continued support in developing skilled manpower from Bangladesh. Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan Md. Daud Ali, Director for South-West Asia Affairs at METI's Trade Policy Bureau Toshiyuki Shimano, Director of the Economic Partnership Division Hiruto Uchino, and Bangladesh Commercial Counselor in Japan Morarji Desai Barman, along with other officials from the Bangladesh Embassy, were present at the meeting.

Denmark to host meeting on Arctic security
Denmark to host meeting on Arctic security
COPENHAGEN, May 11, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - The leaders of Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Norway will meet Monday for talks on Arctic security, Denmark's government said, as US President Donald Trump's vies to gain control of Greenland. Trump has repeatedly said the US needs the strategically-located  resource-rich Arctic island for security reasons, and has refused to rule out the use of force to secure it. Trump's comments have sparked concern in other Arctic regions as well, including Iceland and Norway's Svalbard archipelago. The remarks have also angered Danish and Greenlandic leaders, who have insisted that the island will decide its own future and the US "will not get Greenland."  "Even though our countries meet in different parts of the world, it is natural that we, in this circle of countries, meet to discuss the current security situation in the Arctic and the North Atlantic," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement issued on Sunday. Monday's talks will be held in Torshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, and be attended by Frederiksen as well as Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Iceland's Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir and Faroe Islands Prime Minister Aksel Johannesen. Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store will participate via video link.
