CHATTOGRAM, May 11, 2025 (BSS) - Jamaat Ctg city unit Nayeb-e-Ameer and former president of Bangladesh Islami Chattra Shibir Dr. AZM Obyedullah passed away in a city hospital early today.
He was 64.
AZM Obidullah had been suffering from liver and other diseases for the past two months and breathed his last at the city’s Parkview Hospital around 1 am, his colleague Shah Kamal told BSS.
The dedicated politician left behind his wife, two sons, three daughters, friends, well-wishers and political fellows to mourn his death.
The death of such an elderly political stalwart of Jammat-e- Islami in Chattogram district has cast a pall of gloom in political, cultural and social arenas as elsewhere in the city and district.
The first namaz-e-janaza of AZM Obayedullah was held in the city’s Parade Maidan at 11 am today. The namaz-e-janaza was conducted by deceased’s second son Muaz Abrar.
Late Obyedullah will be buried next to his mother's grave in the cemetery after the second namaz-e-janaza at his ancestral village of Charfashion of Bhola district after Esha prayer tonight.
Dr. Obayedullah was born in Charfashion in Bhola district. He studied at Chattogram and Dhaka Universities and obtained a Commonwealth Executive MBA degree. His role as a patron of literature and culture was significant.
Throughout his career, he was the Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Kalyan Parishad and was involved with various organizations including Boy Scouts and Red Crescent. Known as a motivational speaker, AZM Obayedullah also dedicated himself to promote literature and culture in his professional life. He was the editor of the monthly Angikar Digest and the editor-in-chief of Wheel Business Magazine. Two of his popular books are “Tarun Tomar Mon” and “Swapner Thikana”.
He served as the founding registrar and director governing body of the International Islamic University – Chattogram (IIUC).
Central Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Mohammad Shahjahan, former lawmaker and city Ameer Shahjahan Chowdhury, City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir's Central President Zahidul Islam, Jammat’s central leaders Prof. Ahsanullah Bhuiyan, IIUC VC Prof. Dr. Mohammad Ali Azadi, Dhaka city south Nayebe Ameer Ctg city unit general secretary Principal Mohammad Nurul Amin and elder son of late Obayedullah Md Mosanna, among others, participated in the namaz-e-janaza.
Leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Chattogram city, south and north districts, along with their front organizations and different socio-cultural organizations condoled the death of AZM Obayedullah.
In their condolence message, they paid homage to the memory of the deceased, prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and recalled his contributions in democratic movement and promoting literature and culture.
