DHAKA SOUTH, Sept 10, 2026 (BSS) - A mobile court today sentenced a groom, the father of an 11-year-old girl and a marriage matchmaker to different terms of imprisonment for arranging and assisting in the child marriage of the schoolgirl in Keraniganj of Dhaka.
The court also fined the girl's sister Taka 5,000 for her involvement in the incident.
The mobile court, led by Keraniganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk, conducted a drive at Ramarkanda village under Shakta union on Wednesday and handed down the sentences.
The convicts were identified as groom Farhad, 19, the girl's father Azizul Haque, 40, and marriage matchmaker Hasan.
Farhad was sentenced to one month in jail, while Azizul Haque and Hasan were each sentenced to 15 days in jail.
UNO Omar Faruk said the mobile court conducted the drive following a tip-off that preparations were underway in Ramarkanda village to arrange the marriage of an 11-year-old girl.
"As the offence was proved at the spot, the accused were sentenced under the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2017," he said.
"The kazi in the illegal marriage will also be brought to justice soon," he added.
