CHATTOGRAM, Sept 4, 2026 (BSS) – Janmashtami, one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community, commemorating the birth of Lord Sri Krishna, was celebrated in the port city and throughout the district with great religious enthusiasm and devotion.

The Sree Sree Janmashtami Udjapan Parishad Bangladesh (SSJUPB) hosted a discussion meeting at the JM Sen Hall in the city and distributed food items to over 200 Mod-Mondirs during today’s event.
 
The day's activities included the worship of Lord Krishna, Geeta Jagna, Kirtan, a rally, discussions and distribution of sweets.
 
As part of celebration programmes, the organizers held a colourful rally, which commenced from the JM Sen Hall area, traversed several significant streets of the city, and concluded back at the same location.
 
Numerous religious events  are scheduled to be held at the JM Sen Hall until September 6. Additionally, the Janmashtami Parishad has initiated programmes for distributing clothing, conducting blood donations, and providing food to orphans and those in need.
 
CMP Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Shawkat Ali addressed inaugural function as the chief guest at the inauguration of the vibrant Mahashobhajatra, commemorating the auspicious birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. 

"We must strive to create a non-communal, non-discriminatory, and equitable Bangladesh through the collective efforts of all. The primary objective of all religions worldwide is to promote human rights and peace within society. We must work together to build a joyful and prosperous nation that embraces individuals of all faiths and backgrounds," he said.  
 
Shrimat Swami Sachchidananda Puri Maharaj officially opened the Mahashobhajatra at the Andarkilla intersection in the city. The Geeta reading commenced under the leadership of Central Committee Vice-President Chandan Das, with Babul Ghosh Babun, the convener of the Mahashobhajatra Sub-Committee, presiding over the event.

Among the distinguished guests were Advocate Chandan Talukder, President of the Janmashtami Udjavan Parishad Central Committee, Advocate Chandan Talukder, General Secretary Lion R.K. Das Rupu, Principal of the ISKCON Shri Krishna Temple Darubrahma Jagannath Das Brahmachari, General Secretary of Nandankanan Radhamadhav Temple Taranityananda Das Brahmachari, and Acting President of the Chattogram city Puja Udjavan Parishad Professor Arpan Kanti Banerjee, among others who spoke at the event.

The procession started from city’s Andarkilla, traversing Laldighi Par, Kotwali Mor, New Market, Nandankanan, DC Hill, Cheragi Pahar Mor, and concluded at JM Sen Hall. Leaders from various temples and religious organizations took part in the procession, carrying banners and festoons.
