DHAKA, Sept 3, 2026 (BSS) - The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested an alleged professional criminal and shooter from the capital's Mirpur area with a foreign-made pistol, a revolver and four rounds of ammunition.

The arrested man was identified as Md Jamil Hossain alias Shooter Zakir, Md Zakir and Khalatoko, 48.

A team of the DB Mirpur Division arrested him during an operation at around 11:20pm on Wednesday, said a DMP press release. 

Police said Zakir was allegedly involved in a shooting incident on July 7, when Md Saiful Islam Siju, 38, joint convener of Mirpur Thana Swechchhasebak Dal, was shot at with an alleged attempt to kill him over territorial dominance and the distribution of criminal proceeds in Senpara Parbata area.

Although Zakir managed to flee after the incident, his associate and fellow shooter Md Kawser Bhuiyan alias Shanto alias SB, 24, was arrested by Mirpur Model Police with firearms and ammunition.

Police recovered a foreign-made pistol with two rounds of ammunition in its magazine, a black foreign-made revolver containing two rounds, and an empty magazine from his possession.

According to the preliminary investigation, Zakir is a professional criminal and armed shooter who had allegedly been using intimidation to establish dominance in Mirpur for years. 

Police said that during the previous Awami League government, he worked in Mirpur as an associate of alleged top criminal Tanvir Islam Joy.

After Joy's death, he allegedly continued his criminal activities as an associate of another member of the crime network, Tajkir.

Two cases were subsequently filed with Mirpur Model Police Station-one over the alleged attempted murder and causing serious injuries, and another under the Arms Act. 

The cases are currently under investigation.
