DHAKA, Aug 29, 2026 (BSS) - Formal construction of the Laldia Container Terminal, being developed with Danish cooperation will begin tomorrow as part of efforts to modernize and expand the capacity of Chattogram Port and facilitate the country's foreign trade.

A foundation-laying ceremony will be held at 11 am tomorrow at the project site in Laldia, Patenga, Chattogram.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury will attend the ceremony as the chief guest, while Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Shaikh Rabiul Alam will attend as the special guest.

Chattogram Port is a key driver of Bangladesh's economy, handling the bulk of the country's import and export trade. With the continued growth in foreign trade, increasing the port's capacity, expediting container handling and ensuring international-standard services have become increasingly important.

Against this backdrop, the Laldia Container Terminal project is considered a major initiative to expand the capacity of Chattogram Port and introduce modern infrastructure and technology-driven management.

The terminal is expected to make port operations more efficient and dynamic, while contributing to the development of Bangladesh's international trade and logistics sector.

Being developed with Danish cooperation, the terminal will enhance Chattogram Port's infrastructure and container transportation and handling capacity, while introducing modern port management systems. It is also expected to make the country's import and export operations faster, easier and more efficient.

The Ministry of Shipping has been undertaking various initiatives to modernize the country's port and maritime transport infrastructure and ensure international-standard services. The Laldia Container Terminal project is an important part of these efforts.

The project is being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with total investment exceeding US$550 million, making it one of the largest PPP investments in Bangladesh's history.

The terminal will feature a container yard, jetty, gate, modern cargo-handling facilities and other necessary infrastructure.

It will have an annual handling capacity of around 0.8 million TEUs and a jetty measuring approximately 615 metres in length. State-of-the-art technology and advanced cargo-handling equipment, including modern ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, will also be installed at the terminal.

Representatives of different ministries, Chattogram Port Authority, relevant local and foreign organizations, business leaders, media professionals and other stakeholders are expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony.
