Shrimp renu worth Tk over 5.62 cr seized in Munshiganj

DHAKA, March 25, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Coast Guard today seized a large quantity of illegal shrimp fry, locally known as "renu," valued at approximately Taka 5.62 crore during an operation in Munshiganj.

According to Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, the operation was conducted on Wednesday morning based on confidential intelligence. A team from the Coast Guard carried out the operation near the Padma Bridge Toll Plaza area under Padma Uttar Police Station around 9:00 am.

During the drive, Coast Guard personnel intercepted and searched three suspected microbuses traveling from Cox's Bazar to Satkhira. Upon inspection, authorities recovered the shrimp fry, estimated to be worth about Taka 5.62 crore.

The seized shrimp fry were released into the Padma River in the presence of the Louhajang Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer to help preserve natural aquatic resources.

Lieutenant Commander Sujan said that such operation will continue in the future as part of efforts to protect the country's fisheries resources and prevent illegal activities that threaten biodiversity.
