PATUAKHALI, March 16, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur today said necessary steps would be taken to abolish the lease system so that fishermen can catch fish without any hindrance.

"Those who own the nets will have the right to fish; there will be no need to take leases for fishing anymore," he told the inauguration ceremony of the re-excavation work of the Galachipa canal and its branch canals at Shantibagh area under Galachipa municipality in the district today.

The programme was arranged as part of a nationwide initiative to excavate and re-excavate rivers, canals and other water bodies across the country.

Nurul Haque Nur said fishermen often have to take leases of wetlands to catch fish. "Measures will be taken so that only those who own fishing nets can catch fish and there will be no leasing system in this regard," he added.

He also said no partisan consideration would be allowed in distributing benefits under the government's social safety net programmes.

On the occasion of Eid, he urged the authorities concerned to remain vigilant so that VGF rice, old-age allowances and other assistance reach the genuine beneficiaries.

Referring to commitments made before the election, the state minister said initiatives would be taken to open up lands in the char areas so that people with valid documents can possess and use their lands.

He also stressed the need to distribute lands leased for one year among the real landless people.

Chaired by Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner Dr. Md. Shahid Hossain Chowdhury, it was also addressed by Local administration officials, public representatives and prominent persons of the area.
