Nomination withdrawal deadline for Bogura-6, Sherpur-3 elections today

DHAKA, Mar 14, 2026 (BSS) - The deadline for withdrawal of candidacies in the elections for Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 constituencies of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) is today.

According to the officials of the Election Commission (EC), candidates may withdraw their nominations by submitting applications to the respective returning officers within office hours of today (Saturday).

As per the election schedule announced by the commission, voting for the by-election in Bogura-6 and the general election in Sherpur-3 will be held on April 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, using ballot papers and transparent ballot boxes without interruption.

According to the EC, a total of five candidates have submitted nomination papers for the general election in Sherpur-3 constituency. They are-Md. Mahmudul Haque Rubel from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP),Md. Masudur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, one candidate each from Islami Andolon Bangladesh and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) and one independent candidate.

After scrutiny by the returning officer, no candidate filed an appeal, meaning all remain valid contenders.

The election in this constituency was previously postponed during the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on February 12 after the death of candidate from Jamaat-e-Islami died. The Election Commission later announced a fresh schedule.

For the by-election in Bogura-6, three candidates have submitted nomination papers. They are- Md. Rezaul Karim Badsha from the BNP, Md. Abidur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and one candidate from the Bangladesh Development Party.

Following the scrutiny by the returning officer, no appeals were filed and all candidates remain valid.

The Bogura-6 seat became vacant after Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the BNP and the current Prime Minister, won the seat in the February 12 election but later vacated it after retaining the Dhaka-17 constituency, as a member of parliament cannot hold two seats simultaneously.

The EC subsequently declared the seat vacant and announced a new election schedule.

According to the schedule, March 14 is the final day for withdrawing nominations, while election symbols will be allocated on March 15.
