Rampal crash leaves family shattered as nine relatives buried

BAGERHAT, Mar 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Rampal crash left relatives devastated as the burial of the victims was completed. 

The accident occurred on Thursday evening when a microbus carrying a wedding party collided head on with a Bangladesh Navy staff bus. This fatal incident left at least 14 dead, including a newlywed couple.

The burial of nine members of the family of groom Ahadur Rahman Sabbir, who were killed in a tragic road accident on the Khulna-Mongla highway in Rampal upazila, has been completed on Friday afternoon.

Thousands of people from surrounding areas attended their namaz-e-janaza. 

A pall of grief has descended on the area, as the atmosphere in Shelabunia village remains heavy with the cries of relatives and neighbours.

Local residents said victim Abdur Razzak, father of another victim Sabbir, had five sons and one daughter. 

In the accident, two of his sons, one daughter, one daughter-in-law and four grandchildren were killed, they added.

Currently, three of his sons and their mother remain alive.

Ashraful Alam Jony, the eldest son of Abdur Razzak who lost his wife, one son and two daughters in the accident, said, "Everything in my life has been destroyed. I lost my wife, children, brothers and sisters. I have become completely alone," before breaking down in tears. 

Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten and Superintendent of Police Hasan Chowdhury visited the accident site and the homes of the victims.

The deputy commissioner said financial assistance would be provided to the families of the deceased.

He said the aid would come from the district administration's relief fund, the Zila Parishad, and under Section 54 of the Road Transport Act, with financial support to be given for each deceased member of the affected families.

The family of deceased microbus driver Md. Naim Sheikh has already received Tk 50,000 from the district administration.

According to sources, Sabbir, son of Abdur Razzak of Shelabunia area under Ward No. 8 of Mongla municipality, got married to Marzia Akter of Naksha village in Koyra upazila of Khulna on Thursday afternoon.

After the wedding, while the microbus carrying the wedding party was returning in the afternoon and reached the Belai Bridge area on the Khulna-Mongla highway, it collided head-on with a Bangladesh Navy staff bus, leaving many people dead and injured on the spot. 

Those killed include Abdur Razzak, president of BNP Ward No. 8 of Mongla municipality; his son and groom Ahadur Rahman Sabbir; Sabbir's brother Abdullah Sani; sister Umme Sumaiya Oishi; Oishi's son Samiul Islam Fahim; Ashraful Alam Jony's wife Farhana Siddika Putul and their children Alif, Arfa and Iram.

The deceased also include microbus driver Md. Naim Sheikh, a resident of Jigir Molla area of Rampal upazila, where he was buried.

State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam attended Naim Sheikh's namaz-e-janaza.

Meanwhile, four members from the bride's family were also killed in the accident. 

They are newlywed Marzia Akter (Mitu), her younger sister Lamia Akter, grandmother Rashida Begum and maternal grandmother Anwara Begum.

Relatives confirmed that they were buried in their village in Naksha under Koyra upazila after Friday's Jummah prayers.
