DHAKA, Mar 9, 2026 (BSS) - Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal Coordinator Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, MP, today said coordinated initiatives involving all relevant stakeholders are essential to ensure safe and smooth travel for passengers during the Eid holidays.
He made the remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting with transport owners and workers at the Sayedabad Bus Terminal in the capital. The meeting aimed to ensure a smooth, safe and extortion-free Eid journey for travelers.
The event was organized by the Sayedabad Bus Terminal Owners and Workers Committee, where participants discussed existing challenges in the transport sector and explored possible solutions.
Shimul Biswas said that every year, millions of people travel from the capital and other cities to their village homes during Eid, putting heavy pressure on roads and highways. During this period, complaints often arise about excessive fares, extortion and disorder in various places, causing significant suffering for passengers.
"To make the Eid journey comfortable and safe, maintaining discipline in the transport sector is extremely important," he said, adding that transport owners and workers must act responsibly.
"There should be no overcharging of fares or mistreatment of passengers under any circumstances," he stressed.
Highlighting the need to stop illegal extortion on highways, he also called for stricter monitoring at key points. "Law enforcement agencies must increase surveillance on highways and important locations so that no dishonest syndicate can hold passengers hostage and extort money," he added.
The meeting was chaired by Nabi Ullah Nabi, convener of the Sayedabad Inter-District and City Bus Terminal Owners Association.
Among others present were Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sarwar Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association Abdul Batten, its General Secretary Saiful Islam, along with other transport owners, workers' leaders, and representatives of law enforcement agencies.
