DHAKA, Mar 9, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator heroic freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam today inaugurated a modern community center equipped with various civic facilities to meet the long-standing social needs of the residents of the old city.
Located on Kazi Alauddin Road, the newly constructed community center is equipped with all modern facilities for various social gathering and events.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony, Abdus Salam said that arranging social and family events had long been a major challenge for residents of old Dhaka. He noted that the new modern facility would significantly ease that limitation.
“We have not only constructed a building, but also ensured modern healthcare services, a library and a gymnasium within the complex. It will serve as a comprehensive social and service-oriented center for the people of old Dhaka,” he said.
The DSCC administrator urged the local residents to ensure proper use and maintenance of the public facility, adding that such infrastructure can be sustained only through collective efforts.
He also recalled the contribution of former mayor and freedom fighter Sadeque Hossain Khoka, who laid the foundation stone of the community center, saying the old Dhaka remains grateful for his development initiatives.
State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain, MP, attended the event as special guest.
Constructed under the supervision of DSCC at a cost of about Tk 389.8 million, the six-storey building includes spacious parking facilities. The second, third and fourth floors each have event halls capable of accommodating about 550 guests, allowing for a total capacity of 1,650 people.
The fifth floor houses the ward councilor’s office, a modern healthcare center and a library, while a state-of-the-art gymnasium has been installed on the sixth floor to promote healthy living.
Officials at the event said DSCC is continuing work to build more community centers to meet the social needs of city residents. Under the DCNUP project, construction of nine centers is already about 52 percent complete. Additionally, 19 centers are being built with the corporation’s own funds and plans are underway for 30 more new centers.
