DHAKA, Mar 9, 2026 (BSS) – Eminent journalism teacher Professor Shakhawat Ali Khan passed away at a city hospital on Sunday night. He was 85.
Family sources said, he had suffered a stroke a few days back and was admitted to a city hospital. After receiving treatment, he was released from the hospital. However, he was taken to the hospital again when he felt sick on Sunday night where doctors declared him dead.
His Namaz-e-Janaza was held this morning at the Dhaka University (DU) Central Mosque.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, along with teachers and students of the university attended the Janaza.
The body of the deceased will be taken to his ancestral home in Dhanua village under Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi district, where he will be buried.
Professor Shakhawat Ali Khan is survived by his wife, one daughter, one son, two grandchildren and numerous students and admirers.
He retired from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka in 2008.
Later, he served the department as a supernumerary professor for five years and remained an honorary professor until his death.
Born in Shibpur of Narsingdi district in 1941, Shakhawat Ali Khan worked for several national dailies before joining the teaching profession.
He served as a member of the Bangladesh Press Council and the Management Board of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) several times.
He was the founding president of the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and chairman of the Society for Environmental and Social Development.
Professor Khan also served as a visiting professor at Southern Illinois University. He published more than 30 research articles in national and international journals and presented papers at seminars in at least 15 countries.
His research interest focused on the interaction between journalism and politics.
