CHATTOGRAM, March 5, 2026 (BSS) - Due to a gas shortage, production activities at two major fertilizer factories, Chattogram Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (CAFCO) in Anwara, Chattogram, have been temporarily suspended in compliance with government directives.

CUFL Managing Director Mizanur Rahman confirmed the temporary halt in production, which began on Wednesday afternoon. The factories will resume production once gas supply returns to normal. The government's decision to limit gas supply to the industrial sector due to the ongoing gas shortage in the country has led to this temporary suspension.

Due to a decrease in gas pressure at fertilizer factories, production was disrupted, leading to a government-mandated shutdown. Workers emphasized the risks of operating without sufficient gas pressure, which could damage equipment. Consequently, the factories were temporarily closed for safety reasons.

CUFL typically produces 1,100 to 1,200 metric tons of urea fertilizer daily, while KAFCO has a capacity of 1,725 metric tons of urea and 1,500 metric tons of ammonia per day. This significant production has been halted due to the gas supply shutdown.
