CHATTOGRAM, June 21, 2025 (BSS) - City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has said that Gautam Buddha showed the path of non-violence, tolerance and friendship.

"It is crucial to embody these values in today's society. This city will be safe for all religions, castes and creeds- this is our commitment," he told a program marking 'Happy Buddha Purnima', on Saturday.

Buddha Jayanti Udjawan Parishad arranged the program at a convention center on the city's Sirajdaulla Road.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain said, "When I took charge of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), I promised to transform Chattogram into a clean, green, healthy and safe city".

"A safe city can be built not only by constructing infrastructure, but also by fostering brotherhood and tolerance among citizens. We want a society where there will be no division, hatred or violence. Where everyone will live peacefully - this is the picture of a truly developed city," he added.

The mayor said, "Once, nationalism was only Bengali-centric. Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman broke this structure and established the trend of Bangladeshi nationalism by including all ethnic groups. Today we are moving forward on the path of that unity. A strong, humane Bangladesh will be built with the participation of all communities."

Dr. Preeti Barua, Joysen Barua, Dipan Kanti Barua, Babu Liton Barua, Babu Debjit Barua, Babu Ripon Kumar Barua, Sujan Barua, Kajal Barua, Paritosh Barua and Pijus Barua, among others, addressed the function.
