DHAKA, Jan 9, 2024 (BSS) - Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC has congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her victory in the national parliamentary election of Bangladesh.

"My congratulations to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her electoral victory," she said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The Commonwealth Secretariat stands ready to partner with Bangladesh to achieve national priorities and looks forward to working with Sheikh Hasina for the people of Bangladesh and all members of the Commonwealth Family, she added.

On January 7, the 12th parliamentary polls were held in 299 seats. Bangladesh Awami League won 222 seats, Jatiya Party won 11 seats and independent candidates 62 seats, partners of the Awami League-led 14-party combine -Workers Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod) got one seat each. Bangladesh Kalyan Party won in one seat in the polls.

The Election Commission (EC) in the meantime published the gazette with the list of 298 MPs today.
