DHAKA, Sept 2, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Acting Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today said the party is committed to protecting the environment through tree plantation, conservation of rivers, canals and water bodies, and efforts to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.

"BNP continues to work on tree plantation, protecting rivers, canals and water bodies, and combating the adverse effects of climate change," he said while inaugurating a tree plantation programme marking BNP's 48th founding anniversary.

Dhaka Mohanagar South BNP organised the programme.

Rizvi said global temperatures are rising and stressed the need to protect trees, fish, rivers, ponds, canals, beels and other water bodies to address the growing environmental challenges.

"Otherwise, it will be difficult to ensure clean air and a safe environment for people," he added.

Rizvi identified unplanned urbanisation as one of the major causes of environmental pollution. Recalling the past, he said Kashful (Saccharum spontaneum) flowers could be seen beside beels and jhils during autumn, but such sights have diminished due to the filling up of water bodies.

"Alongside planned urbanisation, emphasis must be given to protecting the environment," he said.

He called upon everyone to come forward to protect the environment, urging people to plant trees wherever there is vacant space in cities and ensure the protection of rivers, canals, beels and other water bodies.
